Rust Industrial: Auto Smelter, Sorter & Conveyors

Common industrial setups from real guides, step by step in 3D, and every industrial item sorted by what it does. Pick a tab above, or lay out your own in the Industrial 3D Builder.

Common setups

3 setups

Popular setups from published guides, built piece by piece with the game's own models: press "Show how to build it" for the live 3D steps, or open the finished setup in the 3D Builder. Each one names its source.

Box to box: the basic conveyor

Box to box: the basic conveyor: the finished setup in 3D with its pipes and wires

The simplest industrial setup, from Rustafied's first look at the industrial system: a powered conveyor on the wall between two boxes moves everything from the first box into the second. With no filter it moves every item; give it a filter and it moves only those.

Rustafied, "Industrial system overview" (January 2023)
  • 2 × Large Wood Box
  • 2 × Storage Adaptor
  • 1 × Industrial Conveyor
  • 1 × Small Rechargeable Battery
  1. Two large wood boxes against a wall
  2. A storage adaptor on each box
  3. An industrial conveyor on the wall between them
  4. Pipe tool: from the first adaptor's output to the conveyor's input
  5. From the conveyor's output to the second adaptor's input
  6. A power source: here a small battery (the conveyor needs 1 rW)
  7. Wire it to the conveyor and turn it on: everything in the first box moves to the second

The storage adaptors need no power for this; the conveyor does (Facepunch, Industrial Update).

Pipes can't go through walls or building gaps, but they can go through doors (Rustafied).

Auto sorter: one conveyor per category

Auto sorter: one conveyor per category: the finished setup in 3D with its pipes and wires

Loot dropped into the input box goes to its own box by category. Each sorting conveyor has a filter for one category, and the splitter lets all three conveyors reach the input box. Anything no filter takes stays in the input box.

Power
3 rW (1 per conveyor)

The Rust Electrical Handbook (Rustrician), "Auto Sorting": sorting conveyors fed from a splitter
  • 4 × Large Wood Box
  • 4 × Storage Adaptor
  • 1 × Industrial Splitter
  • 3 × Industrial Conveyor
  • 1 × Small Rechargeable Battery
  1. An input box and one box per category
  2. A storage adaptor on every box
  3. An industrial splitter, and one industrial conveyor per category
  4. Pipe: input box → splitter
  5. One splitter output to each conveyor (each one reaches the input box through it)
  6. Each conveyor's output to its own box
  7. Power: battery → first conveyor → passthrough to the next (1 rW each); set each filter

More categories: the handbook splits in threes, one splitter into three more splitters for nine outputs, rather than chaining splitters one after another.

A conveyor only sees the first 16 containers on each side (Facepunch, Industrial Update).

Auto smelter: four electric furnaces, one conveyor

Auto smelter: four electric furnaces, one conveyor: the finished setup in 3D with its pipes and wires

One conveyor does both jobs. Through the combiner it reaches the input box and every furnace; through the splitter it feeds the furnaces and the output box. A furnace's adaptor puts ore into its input slots and takes metal from its output slots. The filter moves the three ores (no more than 8 of each into any one container) and the metal fragments, sulfur and HQ metal they turn into. The furnaces only get power while the conveyor's Filter Pass is on, so they switch off when there is nothing left to move.

Power
15 rW from a small battery (its full output): 2 to the conveyor (it powers its Filter Pass output too), 3 per furnace

Nih, "Automatic Electric Furnace", in The Rust Electrical Handbook (Rustrician)
  • 2 × Large Wood Box
  • 4 × Electric Furnace
  • 1 × Small Rechargeable Battery
  • 6 × Storage Adaptor
  • 1 × Industrial Combiner
  • 1 × Industrial Conveyor
  • 1 × Industrial Splitter
  • 4 × Electrical Branch
  • 1 × AND Switch
  1. Input box, four electric furnaces, output box and a small battery
  2. Storage adaptors: on both boxes and on the front of every furnace
  3. One industrial combiner, one conveyor and one splitter on the wall
  4. Into the conveyor through the combiner: the input box and the end of the furnace line
  5. Out through the splitter: to the output box, and along the furnace line (furnace to furnace)
  6. Conveyor filter ("Require any"): the 3 ores max 8; frags, sulfur and HQ metal no limit
  7. Electrical branches and an AND switch on the wall
  8. Battery → branch (2 to the conveyor, 13 on) → AND A; conveyor's Filter Pass → AND B
  9. AND → a 3 rW branch per furnace; the last furnace takes the rest

The diagram doesn't show how the battery is charged: add solar panels, a wind turbine or a generator.

Where each part stands is ours; every connection, filter and branch setting is Nih's.

Conveyors

5 items

Industrial conveyors move items between containers through pipes; splitters and combiners split and join the flow, and storage adaptors connect the pipes to boxes, furnaces and other containers.

Crafting & smelting

14 items

Furnaces and the oil refinery smelt and burn fuel (an igniter lights them with power); workbenches and the industrial crafter make items; the mixing table, cooking workbench, research table and repair bench do the rest.

Water & fluids

9 items

Pump, catch and store water, clean it to drink, and move it in hoses: water pumps, catchers, barrels, purifiers, and the fluid switch, splitter and combiner.

Farming

11 items

Grow plants and keep animals: planters and pots, sprinklers to water them, heaters for warmth, composters for fertilizer, beehives for honey and chicken coops for eggs.
